Neil McElwee and wife Yanan Sun appear in the SUNDAY MIRROR newspaper… and the DAILY MAIL
Arrested on our wedding day: Couple awarded £21,000 after police wrongly claimed their wedding was a sham …
Cuddling up to one another, with their two little girls at their side, Neil McElwee and wife Yanan Sun are a couple who are clearly madly in love.
But their lives were turned upside down in 2011 when moments before their wedding they were both arrested – after Police wrongly believed their wedding was a sham.
Shortly before saying I do the couple – who’d spent thousands on creating the perfect white wedding – were ushered by the registrar into a side room where four plain clothes police officers were waiting.
They then claimed they’d had a tip off their wedding wasn’t legal arrested the pair on suspicion of a sham wedding.
Yanan Sun, who was six months pregnant with their first baby, had to change out of her white wedding dress and put on forensic police clothes.
Meanwhile, the pair were taken by police to cells where they remained for four hours.
However, it was all a mistake – the paperwork was all in order. Bravely the couple, who had invited 70 guest to their nuptials, decided to return to their hotel reception where they posed for photos, because they didn’t want the buffet food and drink to go to waste.
And the next day the couple went back and signed the papers to wed in their usual clothes.
But Yanan Sun and Neil couldn’t get over how badly they’d been treated. They complained and three police officers were disciplined. They have now been awarded £21,000 for the terrible blunder.
I placed their story in the Sunday Mirror. But the couple, who now have two little girls, say no amount of money can ever compensate for that awful day. It was supposed to be the best day of their lives and even now they can hardly bear to talk about it.
Their extraordinary story was also placed with Daily Mail online where it gained many comments – mostly saying how ridiculous such a lovely couple were ever arrested!
And I am delighted to announce that following this feature, my interviewees’s story will be appearing in a top women’s weekly! They have also been asked if they would like to appear on TV…
