In January 2012 Featureworld received an email from Hayley Goleniowska, the mum of Natty, who has Down’s Syndrome.
“I have set about changing old perceptions of the condition by creating a blog with thoughts, tips, advice and plenty of beautiful photos of my daughter,” she wrote, ” in order to offer support to other parents and to change the attitudes of medical staff.”
Then Hayley’s blog, Downssideup was in its infancy with just a couple of posts. If my memory serves me correctly, she had only just set up on Twitter. Hardly anyone knew about Natty and Hayley was looking to gain publicity to launch her blog.
Fast forward just over a year later – following publicity gained by Featureworld in national newspapers, a national magazine and on national TV – and Hayley’s blog is an amazing success – with thousands of followers on Twitter.
But we are even more delighted to learn that Natty has been awarded a Child of Courage award – in honour of her help opening doors for children with disabilities everywhere and gently changing perceptions as he melts hearts wherever she goes.
We think the aims Hayley outlined when she first contacted Featureworld have been well and truly achieved!
