Malissa Jones’ story appears on the cover of CLOSER magazine…
Malissa Jones first contacted Featureworld when she was just 17 and had gone from 34st to being one of the youngest people in the UK to have a gastric bypass.
At the time it seemed a dream come true for Malissa and she quickly went down to around 11st. She got a job and met Chris, who is now her husband.
But in fact her gastric bypass has ruined her life. Firstly, she was denied the surgery she desperately needed to get rid of 2st of baggy skin. Then she couldn’t stop losing weight.
She then got pregnant but her baby was born early and only survived for 55 minutes. She sank into a terrible depression and when she became dangerously anorexic, her story made headlines around the world.
Last year Chris and Malissa married and the couple have since been trying for another baby. Despite still suffering from problems related to the bypass, Malissa has put on weight (she now weighs around 91/2 stones) and has tried to get herself in optimum health.
But a pregnancy just hasn’t happened and now doctors say Chris and Malissa might need IVF to have their longed-for baby. The reason is that the bypass and other digestive problems Malissa has suffered from since, appear to have scarred her reproductive organs. The scarring has effectively blocked Malissa’s tubes meaning an egg cannot get through to become fertilised.
Malissa and Chris are doubly upset because sadly as they have already had a baby (even though Harry died), this means they do not qualify for IVF on the NHS. The couple have no idea how they will ever be able to afford IVF and are devastated.
Malissa says: “I wish I’d never had a gastric bypass. If I’d known it was going to give me infertility problems and stop me having a baby, I never would have had it done.”
