The cost of a sponsored article on Mail Online?
A cool £65,000…
At Featureworld I get a lot of press releases and stories from PR and promotion companies. All of them are being paid by a company, charity or individual to get publicity in big national newspapers, magazines and on television.
Many of their clients will be paying hundreds or thousands of pounds to the PR company to come up with ideas to plug them in the hope they, their product website or book will be mentioned on a website such as Mail Online.
Some will be lucky. Someone like me will pick up their press release and it will see the light of day in the national press. If someone is very fortunate their piece will be printed in all the national press and be talked about on TV and radio.
It might be promoted to the top spot on a massive traffic website such as Mail Online where it will be read by millions of people and shared all over the world.
In this case the follow on effects can be priceless. At Featureworld I have seen people’s books picked up, charities gain thousands of donations in only a few hours, and sometimes receive requests for individuals from all over the world after their story has featured on a national newspaper website.
But for many due to the huge amount of information journalists are sent every day the vast majority their press releases will never even be read.
So it’s not surprising that Mail Online has come up with a solution. As reported by Dominic Ponsford in Press Gazette, Mail Online has recently announced it is to charge £65,000 for a single sponsored article.
While such articles are clearly marked as ‘sponsored’ they are still written in Daily Mail style and formatted as a news article, it can gain lots of comments as any usual story does. In fact, many readers don’t really notice they are ‘adverts’ rather than a story. As such according to Mail Online it can be guaranteed 450,000 page views – and presumably far more views from people sharing it on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites.
