Gemma Broadley recently appeared via Featureworld in THE SUN newspaper and TAKE A BREAK magazine… so what’s it like to sell your story? Here, Gemma – who told her story about how a gastric bypass made her lose too much weight – describes what happened in her own words…
“Whilst reading a magazine one day I decided that people may be interested in reading about my gastric bypass story. I thought that by reading my story, it would help people to not make the same mistakes I have and have a better understanding of the operation that I had and the possible effects it could have on their life. By having my story published, I thought that I could get my message across to a large amount of people.
At first I emailed the basic outlines of my story to various magazines. I didn’t know any better at the time and it was only by chance that I emailed my story to Alison at featureworld. I was so impressed with Alison and at how professional she was from the very first phone call. I knew instantly that Alison was the one to help me reach the kind of audience that I wanted and that she actually cared. I did a telephone interview and within days, Alison called me and read my story back to me that she had written. The way in which it was written impressed me and I couldn’t wait to see it printed! After reading my story back to me and confirming that all the details were correct, the story was sent to various magazines and newspapers. The story was soon snapped up by a national newspaper.
It was nerve wracking waiting for the story to be printed, it was people’s reactions to my photo’s that I was most nervous about. The day finally came when it was printed and when I saw it, I was over the moon. The layout of the story was so tastefully done, I definitely had no reason to be nervous at all. Reading through my story made me cry with tears of joy as it sent every message that I intended it to. Alison also put useful facts in the story that she had researched. I thought that was fantastic as it gave people a better understanding of the gastric bypass operation I had had.
I have had mixed reactions to my story, but all positive from my point of view. From what various people have said, I have definitely got my message across. Some people have said that I have inspired them to lose weight through diet and exercise and others have said that they will definitely do more research about the operation before even considering it. The story has also helped my friends and family have a better understanding of what I am going through.
My story has not only been printed in a national newspaper, but also in a magazine and I have also been asked by a Japanese reality TV show to talk about my story. This experience has also inspired me to write a book about my life and I owe all of this to Alison and Featureworld. Selling my story has been one of the best things I have ever done. I know that I have definitely helped others and I feel so proud of myself. If you have a story that you think people would like to read, I would certainly recommend that you get in touch with Featureworld!“
