Daniel Dand-Hansis’ story appears in the SUNDAY PEOPLE newspaper…
* Innocent Tesco shopper branded a thief after police post wanted picture on Facebook.
Daniel Dand-Hansis came to Featureworld to clear his name after Tesco and his local police made an extraordinary blunder.
All Daniel wanted when he popped into his local Tesco was a bite to eat, a birthday card and some tissues.
But having paid for his purchases, he was shocked when a photo of him from CCTV footage popped up on a Police Facebook site saying he was wanted for shoplifting.
Tesco have since said sorry to Daniel, a healthcare professional, who was shopping in the store in Gainsborough, Lincs and offered him £200 compensation in vouchers. And Gainsborough Police, who apologised on their Facebook page, have since offered an ‘unreserved apology’ for the blunder.
The footage was uploaded to a Facebook page run by his local police station – asking: ‘Do you recognise this person? We need to speak to him in relation to a theft from Tesco.’
Daniel said: “I was shocked when work colleagues friends began giving me the cold shoulder. I had no idea Tesco and the Police were putting up Wanted posters of me.”
Luckily Daniel had kept his receipt and when the CCTV footage was examined, it was immediately clear he had paid for his shopping as normal.
But Daniel was further upset because the footage was still not removed straightaway. He says: “I felt sick. I could have lost my job and I still feel really upset.”
He is now considering suing.
