DOUBLE-DECKER HOME- WRECKER!
When Carolyn Spedding got husband Jarrod a job on the buses, she thought she’d found the perfect job. But her problems were just beginning…
By Alison Smith-Squire
“Do you know anyone who wants to buy an engagement ring?” I turned round to see who was asking. And that was how I met Jarrod Spedding. We both worked at the same factory, he had recently split with his fiancée and apparently heartbroken, he was selling the ring.
“I’m sorry I don’t know anyone,” I replied.
He frowned and my stomach knotted. There was something vulnerable about Jarrod. I felt sorry for him.
And so when, after chatting for weeks at work, he asked me out, I said yes. Within a few months he had moved into my house and we’d had two kids.
It was me who first suggested Jarrod got a job on the buses.
Jarrod got bored easily, he loved a chat – and he was good with people. I thought it would be perfect…
“Me, a bus driver,” he said, looking horrified when I first suggested it, “I can’t see myself riding around in a bus all day.”
But give him his due, he went for the interview anyway and got the job. And he loved it – just like I said he would.
On Christmas Day 2007 Jarrod finally proposed.
“Aw it’s lovely Jarrod,” I said looking at the photo of the pair of us made into a jigsaw.
“Well, we fit perfectly together don’t we,” he replied.
We wed at Gretna Green – the wedding was small and intimate, just like he wanted.
A year went by but newly wedded life wasn’t as happy as I hoped.
Jarrod often had to work late and when he was at home, he was distant.
“Penny for your thoughts?” I asked him one day when he sat having his tea. He’d been late working again and even now seemed preoccupied.
“Oh nothing,” he’d say.
But as we grew further apart, I became increasingly upset.
Finally I said: “Are you seeing someone else, Jarrod?”
“Don’t be daft,” he’d reply, ‘Just working late that’s all.”
Only time went by and he was out on the buses more and more.
And when I tackled him about it again, I was stunned by his reply, “Well, I’m just bored,” he said.
‘What? Bored with me…?” I was crying now, “Well, you’d better leave if that’s how you feel.”
I didn’t expect him to actually go but that night he packed his stuff and went to stay with friends.
A week went by and then one day I was surfing Facebook when I looked on his page and there he was – grinning ear to ear, his arms round woman!
So that was the real reason he’d left…
Michele Hanson her name was – and she looked about 20 years younger.
Furious I immediately messaged her. “Don’t you know you’re seeing a married man. He has two kids!” I stormed.
Then I rang Jarrod.
“You have been seeing someone else haven’t you!” I said.
When he said ‘Yes’ it was a knife to my heart.
I filed for divorce citing adultery.
Meanwhile, Jarrod would come round to see the kids.
Sometimes he was with Michele.
At first I ignored her. How dare she, the woman who stole my husband, come to see my kids with him, I fumed inside.
Months went by and soon I felt sorry for Michele.
Jarrod and I were getting on better and he was begging me to take him back. Sometimes after seeing her, he’d come back to me for his tea. I even used to wash his pants.
I delayed the divorce – maybe we could make a go of it after all.
That was until I heard him one day telling Michele on the phone he loved her and not me…
“Michele’s welcome to you!” I told him. The divorce was finalised, they became a proper couple and life moved on…
Sometimes I had to speak with Michele.
And as time went by I began to realise what a kind person she was. Even the kids agreed she was nice, for the other woman.
Then one day I was out shopping when I bumped into an old friend. “Have you heard about Jarrod,” she said, “he’s seeing someone called Charlene Liversidge now…”
I was puzzled. Only the night before he’d been round with Michele. Surely he wasn’t two timing her now…
A few days later he turned up looking stressed.
“I’ve got a terrible dilemma,” he said sinking into a kitchen chair. And then it all tumbled out.
How he was seeing Charlene and Michele and how he didn’t know which one to choose.
I was angry. “What’s wrong with you?” I said, “What sort of example is this to set to the kids!”
But it didn’t matter what I said. Over the next eighteen months Jarrod dated both women.
And then suddenly I got Facebook message from Michele.
“It’s over with Jarrod,” she said, “I just wanted to say goodbye to the children.”
We got talking.
“I suspected he was seeing someone else,” she said. And I confessed I’d known about Charlene for months.
At first I felt glad Michele was hurt. Now she knew what it felt like to be cheated on, to have your man stolen from you by another woman.
But gradually we got more friendly.
And we were amazed when we swapped notes. It turned out she’d met Jarrod on the bus. And he’d told us our marriage was rocky.
Once I’d thought of Michele as a nasty Mistress. But then she explained how he’d said our marriage was over. She’d never even thought of herself as a mistress.
Incredibly he’d gone distant on Michele as well – clearly when he met Charlene. And he’d even given Michele too the same jigsaw as a present – only with a photo of them in it.
Now I realised Jarrod had lied to her the same as he’d lied to me.
He was playing both of us off at the same time.
Then one day we saw Jarrod and Charlene had announced their engagement with a bus shaped cake. Incredibly, Jarrod had also met Charlene on the X 43 Witchway to Manchester.
And now he was bragging about how he’d been lusting after her for six years – when during that time he was married to me and seeing Michele.
It made both of us realise how lucky we are to be rid of him. We’ve both moved on – I have a new man in my life – but that doesn’t stop us feeling it’s our duty to warn Charlene to be careful. I’d like to offer her some advice: once a cheater always a cheater. And we want to say thank you to Jarrod. Because without him, we’d never have met!
Michele, 29, says: “I was stunned when I found out Jarrod was being unfaithful to me too. I thought I was the only passenger on his bus Jarrod had fallen in love with. How we met always seemed so romantic.
I was devastated to find out he’d been chatting up Charlene on his bus as well.
I first met Jarrod when I caught the bus to university every day. He was so friendly that I even wrote to his company to tell him what a credit to them he was.
Jarrod told me he was married with kids. I never wanted to break up any marriage. So for a long time our relationship was just friendly banter on the bus.
But then he began telling me how he and Carolyn were virtually living apart. And by the time, six months later, towards the end of 2009, he suggested we meet for a coffee, I believed their marriage was well and truly over.
When you’re with Jarrod he promises you the world. No doubt he makes Charlene feel special, as if there’s no other woman in the world quite like her. But if she’s got any sense she’ll see him for what he is and dump him.”
Jarrod, 49, says: “ The failings in both relationships were well before my relationship with Charlene began. Charlene knows I was with Michele at the time I was with her. It’s all sorted now, we’re happy now.”
