Overweight mum loses 12 stones for her children – story on Mail Online
Mother beats odds to have twins while on the pill. But she is immediately sterilised during their BIRTH
She did not want to be sterilised but doctors said having more children will kill her
Having twins was a wake up call for Sophie and she has since lost 12 stones
Sophie Clarke, 28, was already massively overweight when she accidentally got pregnant with her twin girls while on the pill.
But although she and husband Liam already had three children, they were still excited about the additions to their family.
However she was horrified when after her first meeting with her midwife she was immediately referred to a consultant.
Sophie had believed all was well with this pregnancy. But the consultant told Sophie her pregnancy was high risk because she was so overweight. She was already suffering from gestational diabetes. And if she didn’t do something she would not live to see her twins grow up. In fact the doctor predicted she would become diabetic, end up in a wheelchair and would likely have a heart attack at a young age.
Thankfully Sophie’s twin daughters were born healthy but because she was so overweight she had to have a caesarean. Doctors were also concerned she could conceive again – her twins were conceived while she was on the pill and because having more children would almost certainly kill her, they advised she should be sterilised at the same time as having a caesarean. She was devastated but terrified she would not live to see her children grow up. So during the twin’s c-section she decided to be sterilised there and then.
Larger than ever after giving birth – she weighed 22 stones and 10.5Ib – Sophie sank into a depression.
But then a friend persuaded her to go along to a weight loss class at Slimming World. Now 22 months after her twins were born, Sophie, who is 5ft 5” tall, now weighs 10 stone 10Ib and her life has changed beyond belief. She feels much healthier and whereas once she dreaded buying clothes she now adores shopping on the High St.
All the children have benefited from Sophie’s healthier lifestyle – rather than relying on junk and convenience foods she now cooks from scratch – and husband Liam has even lost three stones as well.
Sophie says: “If I hadn’t got pregnant with the twins I don’t think I would have realised just how dangerous my weight was to my health.”
She is however upset that she was sterilised. ‘I know I am lucky to have five children when so many can’t have just one child – and I was not intending to have more. But I do feel sad as I feel something has been taken away.’
