All of their ten babies were in special care
Mum Heather has risked her life to have her children
Thought to have had the largest number of surviving premature babies in the UK
Heather Esplin, 41 tells of her incredible journey to have five sons and five daughters…
Nine month old Isaac was born at 30 weeks, Dana 33 weeks, Conner 35 weeks, Imogen 31 weeks, Tamara 34 weeks, Alan 35 weeks, Robyn 31 weeks, Owen 28 weeks, James 34 weeks, Jolise 37 weeks.
Incredibly all of the children were born early and needed to spend weeks in special care baby units.
Heather already had her eldest two children from a previous relationship when she met husband Alan, who works as a roofer.
Each of their children was planned and wanted but despite all the worries they say it has all been worth it as they now have the perfect family.
Their children are aged from 9 months to age 23. And 23 year old Jolise recently made them grandparents when she had a little girl, two.
Sadly their youngest will be their last because in her last pregnancy Heather almost died. She was found to have a rare condition, placenta percreta where the placenta grows through the uterus. As a result Isaac was not only delivered at 30 weeks but Heather underwent an emergency hysterectomy to save her life.
It was devastating. She says: “People think I am fine because I have a large family. But not being able to have another baby has left me heartbreaking.”
Needless to say the couple, who live in an eight bed semi have their work cut out feeding and clothing such a large family – but Heather’s husband works all hours to ensure they are well looked after. They all go on holiday together – they went to Cyprus last year – and the children are proud to be in such a big loving family.
