Meet Britain’s youngest backpacker… story in WOMAN mag
Have baby will travel!
Now mum Susannah Cery whose son Alfred has backpacked all over the world, has set up a website to help other families travel with their kids.
Most new parents worry about taking their baby on holiday – but little Alfred, the youngest backpacker I have ever heard of – was just 11 months when he went backpacking to Singapore.
Since then Alfred, now aged six, has been to 24 countries including Malaysia, Hong Kong Thailand Australia, India, Laos, Vietnam, all through Europe, Nepal, Dubai, Egypt and America.
He has been on hundreds of flights, trekked volcanoes in Asia, scaled the mountains of Nepal, painted elephants in Thailand and stayed in a Cambodian treehouse.
Ironically his parents mum Susannah, 41, and dad Kelvin, 44, took him backpacking as it was cheaper than holidaying in the UK.
However, before he was born they had always loved their global travelling lifestyle and decided having a baby wouldn’t stop that.
Some friends and family were concerned that they would not be staying in hotels and some of the places might even be dangerous – or that eating different food could cause tummy upsets in such a small child.
But the couple say they have never put him in danger and mixing in so many cultures might have helped develop a strong immune system.
They believe Alfred’s life is enriched by all the travel – even if he has had to go without a shower for days in some places and endure temperatures of minus 8 on one trip.
For example he isn’t afraid to sample exotic fruit and veg and he always tries to learn a few words of the local language.
Now Alfred’s started school but Susannah and Kelvin intend to continue their budget world travels, which they believe are educational as well as fun.
Susannah has now started up a website, ourtribetravels.com to give advice to other parents travelling the world with their children.
Susannah’s story also appeared on Mail Online! and the Mirror website.
